History

Construction was complete on the building located at in 1873 by Empire Car Works. Empire Car Works was a major railcar manufacturer within the City of York, Pennsylvania. In 1894, Keystone Farm Machine Company moved into the building and manufactured and sold farm equipment. In the beginning of 1919 the building was bought and branded as the Keystone Color Works Building. Keystone Color Works, Inc. manufactured wallpaper colors and mica. As industry evolved the production of mica was discontinued and the manufacturing of paint became a large scale of their business. In June of 1935 the paint department was closed and the manufacturing of wallpaper colors became a vital part of the Keystone Color Works business.


Our Vision

A Redevelopment Agreement with the Redevelopment Authority for the City of York was executed in the fall of 2014. The Color Works Building is located in the vibrant Northwest Triangle and was converted into 29 high end loft style apartments. Each apartment features exposed brick walls and beams, stainless steel appliances, hardwood or acid etched concrete floors, granite countertops, high efficiency heating and cooling, washer/dryer hookups, and much more. The building was completely revitalized with an industrial, modern feel exposing all the character dating back to 1873. Color Works offers secure on-site parking, elevator servicing each floor, a community patio with grill and seating, and a commercial fitness room with cardio machines. The property is conveniently located in Downtown York City one block from the White Rose Bar & Grill, and minutes to I-83 and route 30.
